I found this piece on my local Craigslist last night. I thought I would create a ciel de lit, or bed canopy, for the guest room. At a mere $50 it was a steal! Please pardon the photos. They are from Craigslist. I will take more tomorrow but I am so excited about this piece!
I am trying to discover its origins but I am at a loss.
The bonnet, which is quite large, measures approximately four feet wide, two and a half feet deep and one and one half feet tall. It is made with dovetailed joints. The box is complete, it is enclosed all the way around. Perhaps it was part of a cabinet or a bookshelf? Part of an entryway? It looks like something from an old library. Maybe the Masons or Oddfellows?
Here's the best part; The medallion is inscribed with the words Amore ed Arte, which translates to Love and Art.
I am just so curious! Where did you come from?
Have you ever seen anything like this?
What you manage to find on Craiglist is amazing! love your bed canopy idea..could have been a object once used in a church as well...above a pew..enjoy and please share the results how you will use it. hugs Colette
ReplyDeleteWow that is a really interesting piece, I wonder if maybe it was purchased from an estate sale... anyway I LOVE the idea of it as a bed canopy, can't wait to see how you incorporate this!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen anything like it but it looks fabulous. I can't wait to see what you'll do to it!

Ms. Divine. Another Divine Graig's List Find. I would say more than likely it is the top off a cupboard. Was probably too tall to go into some ones house. They usually came off, pegs, so one could move them easlier/ These European Cupboards were often very tall, some times up to 9 feet and taller. They usually came apart in up to 4 pieces. They were made not wide but tall to fit between windows, ceiling were so much taller in those days. Several countries made them, what language is this? That would be a clue as to where it was made. These cabinets were found in many rooms in homes of that time. Making a canapy would be so fun/ Keep up the good work. Love and Sissy Kisses, Richard, from My Old Historic House.
ReplyDeleteI would like that in my bedroom. I hope to see it soon in yours..

Andie, I've never bought a thing on Craig's list. Can't imagine that I'd find anything like the treasures you seem to attract. This piece is amazing. Could it be something from a theatre?
