Serendipity!

Am I fickle or what?  I bought my Montgolfier Hot Air Balloon chandelier because I thought it was the most awesome chandelier ever known to mankind!
Of course, I found it on Craigslist.
Alas!  It really does not work in the area I placed it!  You see, I originally wanted it for Gracie's play room but the ceilings are eight feet tall and the chandelier is four feet tall.
I wish I could find a spot for it.  Just looking at it makes me happy!
Any ideas?

I hung it in the Breakfast Room.  However, it doesn't complement the grisaille panels I am installing in the adjacent secretary.  Well, if I ever finish that particular project!

Along came Craigslist and all my problems are solved!

Enter the Manoir Chandelier  from Canopy Designs!

Here it is in its original habitat:
People actually live like this!
When I googled the address before I went to pick this up on Craigslist I saw the real estate listing.  This home is in Chicago's Lincoln Park area.  It had a price tag of $3,000,000.  Yessir.  Three million dollars.  American currency.
As I was driving to pick up the chandelier I did the math in my head.  This gentleman could buy a substantial number of homes in my neighborhood and still have money left over!
I digress...as usual.

I am waiting for the electrician to come and hang this!
I will post a photo the very second he does!

  5. YOU. ARE. KILLING. ME. SOFTLY. (with your craigslist finds) !!!!!! I adore this chandy and have coveted this style for over a year. I have searched and searched for a great bargain and have yet to find one. I so hope it was a great price!!!
I still adore the hot air balloon chandy and am confident if you do not find a room for it you can re-sell it for a wonderful profit considering the amount of work you put into it.

  11. You may not like me for saying this, but I was just CRAZY about that Montgolfier Hot-Air Balloon chandelier, and thought it looked wonderful above the breakfast room table -- it all seemed so appropriately "French," even if it wasn't quite. This replacement, while elegant and all that, seems much more prosaic to me -- something you'd EXPECT to find, whereas the Balloon added a charming, offbeat touch of whimsy that stopped the area from looking too formal and pretentious.

Sorry to provide a dissonant note amidst all the adulation, but if I were to change anything about the breakfast room, it would be to scrap those rather garish looking faux-grisaille panels, and use something with muted, antiqued pastel coloring made to look like old oil paintings -- OR -- gold stenciling with a gray wash.

Of course, it's your home, my dear, and you must follow your heart and do what pleases you most -- you're certainly not doing it for me -- but I really LOVED the breakfast room as you presented it just three days ago.

    My two cents.

  14. I like them both very much but the new one you got is my fave...........as far as the 4' chandy, can you put it sort of in a corner in your daughter's room? as a piece of art more than a lamp?... a corner where you could put a little table under it or something? It's a shame not to hang that beauty!

  15. How about weatherized and placed outside atop a lampost.

Okay... I don't suppose that you could add a weathervane? ;)

  16. If you have a dramatic stairwell at least two storeys high, you might want to hang Montgolfier so it may be seen and enjoyed at all levels as you walk up and down. I think it may be large and imposing enough to fill such a space, providing you have one. Do you?

I still like it over the breakfast table, however. I thought it made a unique statement of whimsy tinged with elegance -- or maybe it was elegance tinged with whimsy? ;-)
